EC gluten-free labeling regulations enter full force
The European Commission implemented regulations on gluten-free labeling across all EU member states on January 1.
It stipulated that a product can bear the term ‘gluten-free’ if the gluten content does not exceed 20 mg/kg in the food as sold to the final consumer.
Simon Flanagan, food safety consultant at RSSL, said that complying with the new regulation would be “fairly easy for most food manufacturers and suppliers of non-pre-packed foods provided they observe the basic, best-practice principles in ingredient handling and laboratory analysis”.
