Pancake Day remains a truly traditional event for most Brits
Like Whole Earth, Vypr’s findings from its 2023 Pancake Day also found a preference among Brits for the traditional.
The Manchester-based product intelligence platform asked a nationally representative sample of its 65,000-strong community how they are planning to celebrate Shrove Tuesday.
- Two-thirds of consumers are celebrating Pancake Day this year.
- A third will be swapping out the English-style pancake for French crepes, 12% for the softer, fluffier American stack, and 10% for the smaller Scotch pancake.
- 80% will tuck into the treats at home, with 11% planning to eat out.
- While most will celebrate with family and friends, 10% will eat alone.
- Just 15% said they won’t be celebrating the day this year.
The UK’s traditionalist tastebud still rules the roost with 56% of consumers opting for the lemon and sugar combo.
Maple syrup is a favourite among 34% of those polled, with chocolate for 34% of fans.
Other flavour favs include fruit (27%), honey (22%), whipped cream (20%), sugar and orange juice (both 13%). Savoury choices came up with cheese and ham at just over 10% and cheese and beans at 5%.
Nearly 60% of respondents said they will be tossing pancakes at home with their family. Couples were also getting in on the action (38%) and doing it with friends got a thumbs up among 13%.
Most consumers will pick up the necessary ingredients from the supermarket; 13% will pop into their local shop and 10% will get what they need online.
So, despite the consumer’s widening taste for adventure and interest, ultimately, Pancake Day remains a truly traditional event for most Brits.
