Sappi has partnered with Nestlé and packaging supplier Constantia Flexibles to launch YES! snack bar in recyclable paper.

The paper wrapper is part of Nestlé’s goal to make all its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025 and will be recycled in the countries where it is sold.

The paper is from sustainable sources, certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and The Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification.

"Consumers are looking for more natural and sustainable options when they choose a snack, both in terms of ingredients and packaging,” said Patrice Bula, head, strategic business units, marketing & sales, Nestlé.

Our YES! bars are made with wholesome ingredients that celebrate and care for nature's diversity. We are now relaunching them wrapped in paper, making the packaging easy to recycle and avoiding plastic waste."

YES! snack bars come with ingredients including fruit, vegetables and nuts, Dark Chocolate, Sea Salt & Almond; Dark Chocolate, Banana & Pecan; and Raspberry & Chia Seeds.

Thanks to a demand for environmentally friendly and sustainable paper-based packaging, Sappi says it developed a proprietary barrier technology to offer to its customers.

Sappi has been working with consumer brand owners to develop and supply renewable paper-based packaging understanding and supporting the goals of making their packaging recyclable without compromising on food protection and shelf life,” said Susanne Oste, VP, Innovations & Sustainability, Sappi Europe.

Sustainable products

One example of this is the Sappi Guard range of products, which provides brand owners with a paper confectionery wrapper to meet market demand for more sustainable products.

The acquisition in 2017 of barrier film technology company Rockwell Solutions based in Dundee, Scotland, gave Sappi the opportunity to enhance its product offering by adding recyclable barrier coatings to its products.

The recent launch of the YES! bar by Nestlé provides a clear example of the benefits brought through collaboration across the value chain in our joint efforts to increase the use of recyclable packaging made from renewable wood fibre,” said Thomas Kratochwill, VP, sales & marketing, Packaging & Speciality Papers, Sappi Europe.

Sappi’s own strong commitment to developing sustainable paper-based solutions is bolstered by strong partners. It is only with strong leadership that the new products consumers expect will be realised and shared.”

Stefan Grote, executive VP, Consumer, Constantia Flexibles, added it recognises the importance of actively contributing to the circular economy. With YES! bar, it has underlined its competencies in paper-based packaging that ensure high product quality and freshness over the entire shelf life.

This is an important step towards more sustainable products that may innovate the confectionery packaging sector,” he added.

We are very proud of this successful joint effort in the project with Nestlé and passionate to drive sustainable packaging solutions globally.”

YES! is now available in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxemburg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain and the UK, with plans to launch in more countries in Europe soon.
