Police are investigating the cause of an ammonia gas leak at Goodman Fielder meat factory in Hamilton, on the North Island of New Zealand.

More than 40 firefighters were called to the scene at around 10am on Sunday, October 12, with nearby roads and rail stations closed.

The incident occurred in a storage facility where stuffed cheeses and meat were kept.

The company announced in February up to 125 workers will lose their jobs this year after plans to close the Hamilton meat factory.

It will also sell its pizza business to Papatoetoe-based Mommas Frozen Products, raising net proceeds from both sales of between $15m and $17m.

It plans to sell its New Zealand meat division to Hellers to repay debt.

Goodman Fielder says it will pay out full redundancy if it can't find the 125 staff positions at other Goodman Fielder or Hellers sites.
