Multivac and Bemis announce strategic acquisitions
Multivac and Bemis have unveiled new acquisitions that form part of their respective strategies to expand in Europe and Asia.

German packaging machine giant Multivac announced recently that it had boosted its market position in Spain and Portugal after completing a deal to take over Mobepack Sistem S.L.

Multivac ups Iberian presence

The Spanish company, based near Barcelona, manufactures skinpack and flexible packaging for the meat and dairy industry. It employs 80 workers at its 6,500 square metre industrial facility.

Multivac appeared to suggest there would be no job losses or downsizing of its new asset – stating that the current employees will be integrated into its current Spanish distribution and service business. It added that the manufacturing capacity of Mobepack would continue to be used within the Multivac group.

Francisco Monente, the previous owner of Mobepack, will continue running the company until it has been fully integrated into Multivac’s Spanish operations. Thereafter he will be joint CEO of Multivac Espana.

The company said the takeover had been realized as part of its strategy to increase market share in Spain and Portugal.

“Mobepack has a good market position on the Iberian Peninsula,” said Emilio Hernández, Multivac Spain CEO.

The Spanish company has been the sole distributor for the Weber range of products on the Iberian Peninsula since 1996. The acquisition will see Multivac take over that role and the two companies work “closely and successfully” in several other countries, it said.

The German company welcomed “the extensive customer base of packaging film processors in various market areas” it had secured with its new purchase and vowed to “expand this aspect of the business quickly”.

Hernandez added that Multivac would continue to invest in automation for the food processing and packaging sectors.

Bemis Asia expansion

Last week, Bemis announced it had bought out Mayor Packaging of Hong Kong as part of a long term goal to enlarge its Asian footprint.

Mayor is a privately-owned manufacturer of consumer and specialty flexible packaging and has a plant in Dongguan, China. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

“This acquisition supports our strategy to enhance our presence in the Asia-Pacific region,” said Henry Theisen, company president and CEO.

He added: “The high barrier, flexible packaging operation in Dongguan is a state-of-the art facility that serves food and consumer product companies around the world. The addition of Mayor Packaging complements our existing Asia-Pacific capabilities with a talented management team and an excellent workforce, providing Bemis a strong platform from which to expand in the future.”
