Ceramic insulation wins IPA research innovation award for JBT FoodTech
JBT FoodTech said the development of its latex based ceramic insulation system – an IPA innovation award winner this week - was informed by insights gained from space shuttle engineering.

We caught up with Bill Bayliss, after market business manager North America for JBT FoodTech, at the IPA trade show in Paris to get some insight into how the company's alternative to fibreglass wool based insulation - the CCM3 system - works.

According to Bayliss, the ceramic coating technology provides energy savings, prevents corrosion and has greater longevity than fibreglass but also ensures employee protection through preventing heat-related personal safety problems when working with equipment such as steam pipes.

The sprayable ceramic paint, he said, can be used on various types of equipment such as retort doors, boilers, hot and cold water tanks, hydrostatic sterilizing towers, and pasteurizing tunnels.

The ceramic coating can be applied hot (150 to 200°F) and will withstand surface temperatures up to 350°F, added the JBT spokesperson.

And Bayliss explained how the supplier sees the washable, water and Type A fire resistant coating as a growth enabler in that it has only been applied to a low percentage of the supplier’s considerable base of installed equipment throughout the world.
