Sensus obtained an excellent rating in last week's food safety audit, conducted by AIB International (American Institute of Baking). The company claims that this demonstrates its commitment to delivering safe, high quality ingredients to food manufacturers.

AIB International's audit involved the evaluation of the organisation of the food safety and hygiene programme, the manpower required to make it effective, cleaning schedules, methods and training of hygiene operatives, and management's involvement in food safety. The results of the audit demonstrate Sensus' capabilities in obtaining quality results in the production of its portfolio of Frutafit and Frutalose inulin/fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS).

"This accreditation is an important step that further supports the opportunities of our Frutafit and Frutalose inulin/FOS in bakery applications and beyond," said Sally Brain, vice president of marketing and sales at Sensus America.

Earlier this year Sensus' efforts to obtain approval for a health claim for Vitaalbrood, a range of bread products sold exclusively through the Dutch-based retailer Albert Heijn, were also rewarded. Vitaalbrood was the first bakery product in Holland to be positively assessed in accordance with the Code of Practice Health Benefits 1998.

The officially approved claim relates to intestinal health, and states that the consumption of three slices of Vitaalbrood (with at least 5 g of Frutafit inulin per 100 g) supports a well-balanced gut flora composition and colonic function by selectively stimulating the growth of Bifidobacterium.

Sensus is a global supplier of food ingredients to food and beverage makers in more than 45 countries. The Frutafit and FrutaloseT inulin/FOS marketed by Sensus can be used for many functional and health reasons in a wide variety of foods and beverages.

Many applications of inulin as a health-ingredient are related to its properties as a soluble, prebiotic fibre: in developing fibre-enriched and low carbohydrate foods, improving Ca-uptake in the body and in promoting a healthy micro-flora and immune function in the colon.
