Sunrise Soya Foods, the Canada-based tofu maker, has purchased Quebec-based tofu line Nutrisoya in an effort to expand its production facilities.

Nutrisoya, one of the largest tofu manufacturers in Canada, needed more plant capacity to expand manufacture of its leading soya milk line. Therefore, Nutrisoya sold its tofu brand to Sunrise, which will move its manufacture to Sunrise's new state-of-the-art plant in Toronto. Sunrise will continue to market the brand under the Nutrisoya label in the foreseeable future.

"Since Nutrisoya is significantly expanding its soya milk business in Quebec, Ontario and the US, we do not anticipate any overall job loss in the St-Hyacinthe plant," said Nick Feldman, president and owner of Nutrisoya.

"The purchase of the Nutrisoya tofu brand enables Sunrise Soya Foods to continue its 46 year old leadership in the Canadian tofu marketplace, and significantly enhances our role as Canada's leading tofu manufacturer," said Peter Joe, general manager and CEO of Sunrise Soya Foods.

Since both Sunrise and Nutrisoya are private companies, the purchase price has not been disclosed.

Sunrise Soya Foods was founded in 1956, and is Canada's largest tofu manufacturer and the fifth largest in North America.
