The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) has suspended the supply of bread and self-raising flour to biscuit and confectionery firms to ensure continuous supply for major bread bakers.
The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe spokesman Garikai Chaunza said the country had a week’s supply of wheat left, which means millions of Zimbabweans could be left without the daily staple.
Prices for bread flour have fallen from their highs of 2008, but price pressures are constant for wheat flour used in bread formulations as quality concerns remain.
Surging wheat prices are leading to some hard bargaining along the
supply chain over where the extra costs can and should be taken,
according to millers and bakers.
South African millers must fortify flour and maize meal with a
blend of vitamins and minerals, including folic acid, following new
legislation introduced this week to improve malnutrition in the
country.
