RF Biocidics has installed its radio frequency equipment at an almond firm to eliminate possible harmful contaminants.

Sran Family Orchards processes organic and conventional almonds in Kerman, California.

The company recently invested in a 100,000-square-foot corporate office and the almond processing facility, where the APEX System was installed.

Sran Family Orchards will look for Technical Expert Review Panel (TERP) certification for the machine from the Almond Board of California in Spring.

RF Biocidics said the APEX System does not use chemicals or additives and is designed for the tree nut industry.

The process uses electrical and magnetic energy waves to generate heat but does not cook or roast food so nutrient content, texture, color or taste are not affected.

It provides an alternative to conventional steam heat or chemical pasteurization methods and can remove bacteria, molds and insects from nuts, seeds, spices and dried herbs, grains and dried fruit.

RF Biocidics’ patented process was developed at the University of California, Davis.
