Halloween beyond the sweet aisle explained
- Seasonal shapes, colours and packaging give familiar bakery and snack products a Halloween identity.
- Individually wrapped portions serve trick-or-treating and lunchbox occasions, while sharing formats cater to parties.
- Cheetos and Paris Baguette use unusual flavour sensations to distinguish their Halloween launches.
- Decorating kits and recipe ideas make food preparation part of the celebration.
Halloween doesn’t begin and end with a bag of sweets, particularly when the celebrations involve feeding a houseful of people as well as answering the door. Some 81% of Americans plan to celebrate this year, according to the National Confectioners Association’s Treats and Trends report, making it an occasion with relevance across the food shop.
The association’s survey of 1,000 US consumers found that 94% of parents plan to celebrate with their children, underlining how firmly Halloween is embedded in family life. Decorating homes and carving pumpkins rank among the most popular activities, creating occasions when food is part of spending time with the family rather than simply something handed over on the doorstep.
Halloween’s visual appeal also travels easily across food categories, with the NCA identifying pumpkins as Americans’ favourite seasonal treat shape and ghosts and skulls among the leading choices. A recognisable shape or decoration can give an everyday product a seasonal identity without requiring shoppers to abandon the flavours they already enjoy.
Bakery and snack manufacturers already have a place in these celebrations, whether they’re supplying food for a party, something to share while carving pumpkins or an activity that keeps children occupied. The commercial challenge is making a seasonal product appealing enough to buy while retaining the convenience, taste and price that make it useful once the Halloween decorations come down.
Cheetos and Frankie’s give savoury snacks a spooky makeover

Cheetos Sweet Phantom Heat Puffs deliver a Halloween experience through flavour and sensation, combining sweetness and heat with tingling, numbing and a subtle fizz that builds with each bite. Made without artificial colours or flavours, the product draws inspiration from compounds found in Sichuan pepper that interact with sensory nerves in the mouth.
The puffs are available at retailers across the US in 8oz and 2.5oz packs and through TikTok Shop in three-pack bundles. Returning Cheetos Bag of Bones White Cheddar and Cinnamon Sugar give shoppers two other seasonal options.

Frankie’s Organic Snacks uses shape to distinguish its returning White Cheddar Ghost Puffs, which pair ghost-shaped pieces with an airy crunch. The oven-baked snacks are USDA Organic, certified gluten-free and non-GMO.
Ghost Puffs, White Cheddar Puffcorn and Himalayan Pink Salt Puffcorn are available on Amazon in 15-count multipacks of individually packaged 0.5oz bags, priced at $14.99 each. “The multipacks give families a convenient way to keep individually packaged bags on hand for lunches or snacking on-the-go,” says Matthew Bordonaro, VP of sales at Frankie’s Organic Snacks.
Co-op’s Cheesy Monster Jaws bring cheese-flavoured crunch to UK celebrations at £1.30 for 100g, while its Toffee Popcorn Brains combine apple and orange flavours with a toffee coating, priced at £1.30 for 170g.
