Breakfast cereal’s health halo has taken a bruising after new independent testing detected arsenic, lead, acrylamide and agricultural chemicals across a selection of 77 US cereals, including some of the biggest and most health-focused names in the aisle.
The Clean Label Project (CLP) study covered products from General Mills, WK Kellogg, Post Consumer Brands, PepsiCo’s Quaker, Nature’s Path and Purely Elizabeth – the better-for-you breakfast business Ferrero has agreed to acquire. However, appearing on the tested list doesn’t mean a product breached a safety threshold or performed poorly.
CLP hasn’t released the concentrations found in individual products, named the cereals responsible for the highest results or shown how the measurements compare with regulatory benchmarks. Its report exposes large differences within the category but doesn’t provide enough data to determine whether any specific cereal presents a health risk.
Even so, the findings create an uncomfortable challenge for manufacturers. Nutritional reformulation and shorter ingredient lists won’t necessarily control substances entering cereals through soil, crops or high-temperature processing. The next clean label battleground could be less about what companies deliberately put into a recipe and more about what arrives unintentionally.
Rice, cocoa and oats bring different risks

Rice delivered one of the report’s most dramatic results, with rice-based cereals containing 12 times as much arsenic per serving as the remainder of the category, according to CLPt.
Arsenic can occur naturally in soil and water, and rice is particularly effective at absorbing it. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notes that food can acquire arsenic from the environment in which it’s grown or processed. The risk can vary with geography, agricultural history and the form of arsenic present – information the cereal report doesn’t publish.
Cocoa raised a different concern, with cereals containing cocoa, cacao or chocolate typically recording more than twice as much lead as non-chocolate products. Twelve of the 13 chocolate cereals tested had detectable lead.
That shouldn’t automatically be interpreted as evidence of a manufacturing failure. Cocoa can take up heavy metals from soil, and detection alone says little about exposure or risk. The FDA says lead can’t be completely eliminated from the food supply and assesses concern using the concentration detected, estimated consumption and the vulnerability of the consumer.
But cereal makers can’t simply dismiss the result as nature’s fault. Ingredient origin, supplier controls, blending and finished-product testing can all affect exposure. This is particularly important when brightly packaged chocolate cereals are routinely marketed to children.
“A cereal that’s low in contaminants isn’t automatically a healthy choice if it’s loaded with sugar and offers little nutritional value,” reported CLP.
Acrylamide adds another complication because the processing contaminant forms naturally when certain sugars and the amino acid asparagine react during high-temperature cooking. It was detected in all but one of the 77 cereals, with a 21-fold difference between the highest and lowest results.
Wheat- and oat-based cereals contained around 2.5 times more acrylamide per serving than products made with rice or corn. Yet those same whole grains may deliver fibre and other nutrients manufacturers have spent years promoting.
The FDA says high doses of acrylamide have caused cancer in laboratory animals, although the doses used were far greater than those normally found in human food. Without the underlying cereal concentrations, consumers and manufacturers can’t tell whether the reported variation is merely measurable or materially significant.
Nevertheless, a 21-fold spread suggests formulation and processing choices matter. “Some cereals contained considerably less than others,” noted CLP. “In fact, some cereals contained 21x more acrylamide than others, showing that lower levels are achievable.”
Manufacturers may need closer control of raw materials, baking and extrusion temperatures, residence time, moisture, recipe composition and other factors affecting acrylamide formation. Unlike an environmental contaminant absorbed by a crop, a chemical created during processing may be something the factory has greater power to reduce.
Four cereals dominated the glyphosate result

Glyphosate produced another headline-grabbing finding, but also another transparency problem. Just four cereals accounted for 81% of all the glyphosate measured across the category, while the highest product delivered more than twice as much per serving as any other cereal tested.
The four products weren’t identified.
CLP also detected chlormequat, methoxyfenozide, acetamiprid and metalaxyl. Some are used on cereal crops or may persist through the agricultural supply chain, making pesticide scrutiny increasingly relevant to procurement teams as well as food safety specialists.
However, a detectable pesticide residue isn’t synonymous with a regulatory breach. Risk depends on the amount, frequency of consumption and comparison with applicable residue tolerances. By withholding individual concentrations and product identities, the report leaves manufacturers facing the reputational force of an 81% statistic without the detail needed to interrogate it.
The concentration of glyphosate in only four products also suggests category averages could conceal significant outliers. More extensive supplier mapping, crop-level controls and finished-product surveillance could therefore deliver meaningful reductions without requiring the entire cereal category to be reinvented.
BPA and BPS provided a rare reprieve, with neither chemical detected in any of the 77 samples.
“Compared with our 2018-2019 study, this suggests the cereal category has made meaningful progress in reducing these plastic-related chemicals,” said CLP in its report.
The absence of both chemicals suggests changes to packaging, processing or sourcing have altered the category’s contaminant profile since the earlier study. It also complicates any sweeping suggestion that everything in the cereal aisle is contaminated or unsafe.
Clean label’s uncomfortable contradiction

Clean Label Project named four products in its 2026 Back-to-School Honour Roll: Arrowhead Mills Puffed Kamut, Lovebird Cinnamon O’s, Love Grown Power O’s Original and Three Wishes Cinnamon.
The selections combined comparatively low contaminant results with nutritional and formulation criteria such as lower sugar, fibre, protein, beneficial fats and the avoidance of certain artificial ingredients. Yet the exact scores weren’t published, and the remaining 73 cereals shouldn’t be treated as failures.
The products tested included Cheerios, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cocoa Puffs, Froot Loops, Special K, Cap’n Crunch, Rice Krispies, Weetabix, Oreo O’s and Purely Elizabeth Chocolate Almond and Honey Peanut Butter. Again, inclusion confirms only that a product was sampled, not that it recorded elevated contaminants.
The bigger lesson is that ‘clean’ has become a far more demanding promise. Removing artificial colours or reducing sugar is visible and easily communicated. Controlling arsenic in rice, lead in cocoa, pesticide residues in grains and acrylamide created during processing requires much deeper visibility into agriculture, suppliers and factory conditions.
Cereal hasn’t been declared unsafe, but manufacturers have been handed a warning: consumers are beginning to judge breakfast by what isn’t printed on the box.
