Current covid situation sees Sigep postponed until March
The 43rd annual event, which covers gelato, pastry, chocolate, bakery and coffee, will still be held in Rimini, Italy, at the expo center.
The trade associations concerned said they consider it impossible to attract significant attendance from both Italy and abroad, including Europe. Sigep is staged by the Italian Exhibition Group S.p.A. (IEG).
The name of the event has also evolved to include The Dolce World Expo.
IEG said it has introduced new logos and materials for the show to reflect the aspirations of Italian dolce foodservice supply chains and to the Italian way of interpreting dessert.
The group said the evolution takes place in a market scenario that, in the first half of 2021, was already showing positive signs, according to an NPD Group survey, for two of the five Sigep sectors: artisan gelato and pastry.
In the first half of 2021, compared to 2019, gelato consumption rose 0.4% in Italy, 0.7% in Germany and Spain, 0.2% in the UK and US, 1.2% in Canada and 0.2% in Japan. For pastry, consumption was up 1.7% in France, 1.3% in Germany, 0.1% in the US, 0.6% in Canada, and 0.8% in China.
