What’s new on shelf: potato chips studded with real gold leaf, vegan bacon chips that are all the rage and a new cookie dough from Nestlé

Carrs Foods has launched four new products within its Baker Street range.
Tapping into the growing trend for ‘benefit’ products, the Baker Street Deli Rolls are available in two variants, including Multi Seed and Multi Seed with Chia.
Made with sunflower seeds, linseed, flaked oats and rye, the rolls are high in fibre, low in saturated fat and provide a source of protein. The Chia rolls are also high in Omega 3.
They come in pre-sliced square rolls packed to eliminate waste and offer a guaranteed shelf life of 35 days.
The parbaked Ciabatta Loaf and Rolls are tailored for the convenience market, providing a fully baked fresh option in just 10 minutes.
The new Baker Street offerings are available in Nisa Spar, Dhamecha and Bestway in the UK with a RSP of £1.69 ($2.16) for a four pack of Deli Rolls, £1.30 ($1.66) for 250g Ciabatta Loaf and £1.39 ($1.66) for a four pack of Rolls.
No waffling …
Baker Street is also relaunching its popular Waffles in a new pack size to appeal to busy families looking for breakfast alternatives.
The packs now include eight waffles, which are twin-wrapped for freshness and convenience.
Like the rest of the Baker Street range, the waffles are packed to stay fresher for longer, with a guaranteed shelf life of 35 days.
Available from January 7 through Nisa, Spar, Booker, Bestway, Amazon and Ocado, the new pack has an RSP of £1.35.
The Waffles relaunch is part of a £500K investment that Carrs Foods International has made into its Baker Street brand. The investment encompasses NPD, new branding, packaging and marketing support for the range, which includes 18 different bakery products with a retail value of over £14m.
Going nuts
US snack company Santé Specialty Foods has expanded its line of gourmet roasted and spiced nuts with a new trio of flavors: Bourbon Pecans, Pumpkin Spice Pecans and Chocolate Almonds.
Carefully developed using simple, clean ingredients to achieve a harmonious proportion of sweet and spice, the Bourbon Pecans are buttery with vanilla undertones and a sprinkling of salt, the Pumpkin Spice Pecans feature notes of cinnamon, allspice and clove, and the Chocolate Almonds are dusted with a blend of cocoa powders and a touch of salt.
The California-based company has also recently achieved Non-GMO Project verification status for its entire product line, which, it said, was the next logical step to meet the needs of today’s highly informed grocery shopper.
The new flavors are gluten-free, Kosher and made by hand in small batches in a peanut-free facility.
Available online and through Amazon in 4oz resealable bags for the pecans and 5oz bags for the almonds at a SSR of $4.99.
Cookie dough
Nestlé is rolling out Toll House white chip lemon cookie dough in time for Valentine’s Day.
The sweet treat is a ready-to-bake dough with natural lemon flavor, and dotted with white Nestle chocolate buttons.
Each package features 24 chunks of cookie dough, which a baker just needs to separate and put on a baking sheet before popping in the oven for less than 15 minutes.
Available through Easter, which takes place on Sunday, April 21, for a RRP of $2.99.
Safe snacking
The Safe + Fair Food Company has added Pea Protein Chips to its line of allergy-friendly, clean label offerings.
The plant-based chips are free from five of the top eight allergens and are made with pea protein and lentil flour, and boast 9-10g of protein per 3.5oz serving.
They are also Certified Gluten-Free, Non-GMO, Kosher, cholesterol-free, not fried and free from artificial ingredients, preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, MSG and trans fat.
Available in three flavors, including Hickory BBQ, Sea Salt and Sweet Jalapeño.
The new Pea Protein Chips follow Safe + Fair’s portfolio expansion across multiple categories, as the company continues its mission of bringing clean label food to those with and without food allergies and restricted diets.
The new chips join the snack producer’s existing offerings of popcorn quinoa chips, cookies, granola, grahams, mac & cheese and cake mix.
Safe + Fair donates 3% of proceeds to the Sean N. Parker Center for Allergy and Asthma Research at Stanford University to help find treatments and develop cures for people with food allergies.
Available online for a RRP of $3.49 (3.5oz pack) or as a bundle with one of each flavor for $9.99.

Bling your snack
Japanese snack maker Koikeya has added an ingredient with a twist to its line of premium Pride Potato Chips - potato chips laced with real gold leaf.
Koikeya collaborated with gold-leaf maker Hakuichi based in Kanazawa City of Ishikawa Prefecture to create the Koikeya Pride Potato Kanazawa Gold Leaf Salt chips.
The chips are crafted with particular care to the ingredients and frying process, using gold leaf pieces in two different sizes to ensure the chips are thoroughly coated.
The Koikeya Pride Potato Kanazawa Gold Leaf Salt chips are priced at 300 yen for a 68g bag, available at convenience stores across Japan.
The snack maker is also offering an exclusive set that comes with three packages of extra gold leaf that consumers can sprinkle onto the chips.
The set, priced at 2,000 yen ($18), includes three 68g (2.4oz) bags of the chips and three 0.12g (0.004oz) packets of extra gold leaf.
A limited run of 400 of the sets is available on Koikeya’s online shop.
Bringing home the bacon
PigOut Chips have already earned a cult-like following before even launching (the products are still in the pre-order phase), with celebs like Emily Deschanel and Danielle Monet taking to Instagram to rave about them.
The vegan chips are mushroom-based and will come in four flavors: Original, Cheddar, Chipotle, and Kansas City BBQ. Hearty mushroom slices are transformed with careful cooking and seasoning to create an authentic bacon taste.
The chips are high in vitamin E and contain a cholesterol-lowering statin called lovastatin.
They also contain 73% less saturated fat and 69% less sodium than cooked pork bacon.
Available online in a variety 6-Pack or 12-Pack from $59.99. But they’re going fast.
Chocolate goodness
Dubai-based bakery snacks manufacturer Dofreeze has won a listing in Wal-China for its Eurocake Chocolate Chip Brownie.
The brownie will be available in over 500 Wal-Mart China locations in February 2019.
The Eurocake Chocolate Chip Brownie has been a massive success for the company and joins a family of other coveted treats in the Eurocake roster including Lifestyle Brownies, Brownie Bars, Lova Molten Cakes, Soft and Chewy American-Style Cookies, Pain Au Lait, Jumbo Croissants, Single Cupcakes, Sliced Poundcakes and Banana Twin Cakes.
The company – which sells its products across four continents to over 50 countries and regions – has also become the first food manufacturer in the UAE to obtain the FSSC 22000 v4.1 and pass the Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit (SMETA).
