RR Donnelley said the takeover of fellow US company StratusGroup would provide a major boost to its packaging and product labeling business.

The multi-faceted Chicago-based firm said it is looking to expand its packaging division. Currently its operations include packaging design, print production, finishing, assembly and pack out to a raft of sectors including the food, beverage and consumer packaged goods.

"With the exponential growth in media choices available to consumers, point-of-purchase packaging plays an increasingly important role in our customers' marketing mixes," said John Paloian, company chief operating officer.

StratusGroup produces custom pressure sensitive labels and paperboard packaging for the food, beverage and beauty industries.

Paloian said the new acquisition would readily complement its current prime label, corrugated and other global packaging capabilities. The close proximity of StratusGroup’s plant was also an advantage and the COO said an expansion in production there was likely to take place immediately.
