Sonoco-Alcore said higher raw material costs were to blame as it announced its European paperboard prices would increase next month - the second rise since the start of the year.

The company said the price for coreboard and uncoated recycled board will climb by €40 per metric ton or ₤35 per metric ton effective 9 May, 2011.

The increase is in addition to the price rise in February 2011, with the company not ruling out further cost jumps later in the year.

"Recovered fiber, starch, chemicals and energy costs have continued to increase,” said Adam Wood, vice president, Sonoco-Alcore Europe.

He added: “The current inflationary environment may mean further increases in the summer if the pricing of our base raw materials continues to rise at the current pace. Our tube and core business is also being negatively impacted, and we will likely enter a new phase of price increases, there, too, also in May."

Sonoco Alcore S.a.r.l., a subsidiary of US-based Sonoco, operates six paper mills, 32 tube and core factories, and a recycling division in Europe.
