Alfa Laval has developed a range of new tank equipment products for the food and beverage industry including weighing systems, conductivity sensors, level switches and a flow transmitter.

All the new products are designed to improve the performance of tanks that perform tasks such as storage, blending, and mixing in food and drink processing.

Weighing systems

The new range includes UltraPure weighing systems that are suitable for mixing, dosing, level regulation, or batch tasks.

Running through the stand-out features of the UltraPure, Alfa Laval said the technology eliminates the need for mounting kits, cutting costs and enabling a faster installation process.

The company added that load cell calibration is independent of cable length, so the unit will not malfunction if the cable is cut during installation. The systems are also shockproof, unaffected by welding voltages, and can tolerate up to 300 per cent overload or side load.

Level Switches

Among the selection of new tank instrumentation are also level switches that are used to see and check the levels of fluid in a tank.

Said to be particularly suited to smaller process tanks, the switches can handle both high and low viscosity liquids. They have a teach-in feature, which renders the sensor insensitive to foam and residues that stick to it when the tank is emptied.

Designed to withstand process temperatures between -20 and +140 °C, they are suitable for Cleaning in Place (CIP) and Sterilization in Place (SIP) processes.

Conductivity sensors

The new range of products also includes conductivity sensors that measure a process liquid’s ability to carry electrical currents. As with the level switches, they are suitable for CIP and SIP and all wetted parts are made of AISI 316L stainless steel and PEEK.

Alfa Laval claims that the conductivity sensors, which can be remotely controlled, provide highly accurate measurements even at low conductivity levels and flow rates. An extra feature of the sensors is an integrated temperature sensor for temperature compensation. This is offered as a 4–20 mA output, providing the user with two measurements in one physical connection point.

Flow transmitter

A magnetic flow transmitter is also included in the new product range. It is used for volumetric measurement of liquids with a certain degree of electrical conductivity – including ones containing solid particles.

It has been enhanced to withstand process temperatures between -20 and +120 °C, making it suitable for CIP and SIP processes. An accuracy of +/- 0.2 per cent can also now be obtained down to a 10 per cent flow rate.

A spokesperson for Alfa Laval said these products have been launched recently in different regions but are now all available globally.
