M&H Plastics has launched its first oxygen-scavenging product as the company looks to expand its presence in the food and drink market.

Traditionally M&H Plastics has specialised in the health and beauty market but the packaging supplier is now working to develop its presence in the food sector and other industries.

It latest foray into the food market involves the creation of an oxygen-scavenging product in PET containers that limits exposure to oxygen in order to extend shelf life. Manufactured from a blend of PET and an oxygen-scavenging concentrate, the product puts up a barrier to block oxygen from penetrating container walls.

M&H Plastics developed the scavenging product following a request from its customer Fire Foods, which wanted to extend the shelf life of its chilli sauces and Hot Chilli Chutney.

Tailored work

Vicky John, marketing manager at M&H Plastics, told FoodProductionDaily.com that the work with Fire Foods is representative of how the supplier operates.

Specialising in more tailored work for food companies, M&H Plastics has recently worked with Silver Spoon on its Cakecraft range to create new packaging products including designer icing tubes with different nozzles and a two-piece swivel cap that gives consumers the choice to sprinkle or pour.

M&H Plastics has also worked with Heinz to create a package for ketchup that looks like a giant tomato, complete with a green stem. This was one of the first products the supplier developed for the food market five years ago.

Before that point, M&H Plastics since it was founded over 30 years ago has focused largely on health and beauty. But now with a range 1,000 standard products and in-house expertise covering concept design, through toolmaking to production, artwork and decoration, the company has set up a business development team to expand further beyond health and beauty.
