Packaging and product designers are to be offered free advice on how to adopt cleaner design principles, become more eco-literate, and avoid charges of greenwashing.

UK sustainable business consultants Envirowise will be hosting a webinar tomorrow covering the issues as it urged food and drink sector chiefs to put carbon reduction measures higher on their agenda by taking on cleaner design principles.

The live web broadcast will see eco-design specialists focus on packaging design from a whole lifecycle perspective, Envirowise’s Jenny Donato told FoodProductionDaily.com. Case studies showing how companies benefited from clean design will also be presented.

With carbon issues now consistently in the news headlines, businesses are increasingly sitting-up and taking notice by analysing their own impact and taking steps to minimise this. However, many have still not yet considered cleaner design as a tool in their armoury," said Donato. “In fact, we’ve had feedback from a number of businesses that senior management appear reluctant to put this topic on the boardroom agenda. So to help food and drink manufacturers secure the support they need from their management team, we have created a suite of compelling video case studies that can be used as part of presentations or proposals.”

She added that companies could introduce eco-design into their products without necessarily being able to justify those green decisions - leaving them open to charges of greenwashing. One aim of the webinar is to help industry players understand the concepts more fully, substantiate their choices and so avoid the pitfalls of the appearance of greenwashing.

Registration for the Webinar, which takes place on 17th February at 10am UK time, can be made by visiting www.envirowise.gov.uk/webinar or by calling call the Envirowise Advice Line free on +44 (0) 800 585794.
