Low cost of ownership, significant space savings and versatility are benefits claimed by manufacturer Loma Systems for its new combination checkweighing and X-ray inspection system.

The company said its new “optimum space saving” CW3 combination checkweigher and metal detector, designed specifically for the food production industry, is the “most technically superior” hybrid model on the market.

The system, an amalgamation of the CW3 checkweigher and IQ3+ metal detector, offers a cost saving of up to 19 per cent compared to buying the machines separately. Its space-saving design also provides a foot-print reduction of 35 per cent, a Loma spokeswoman told FoodProductionDaily.com

“A clear benefit of a combined system is the low cost of ownership and the cost saving compared to a separate checkweigher and metal detector,” she added. “Combining the two systems eliminates the expense of a separate conveyor for the metal detector. The checkweigher measures product weights quickly and precisely; rejecting ‘out of tolerance’ products, while the metal detector consistently detects and rejects contaminated products.”

Variable frequency

The system is able to adapt to a wide range of products because of its variable frequency metal detection and its versatile checkweighing capabilities. The system’s variable frequency “sets it apart from competitors” and can be calibrated in seconds - optimising speed and efficiency. Frequency data for different products can be stored allowing for ease of operation and optimum sensitivity, said Loma.

The checkweigher can weigh a wide range of flexible and rigid packs up to 1.5 kg. The unit is available in line heights of between 700mm to 1200mm and system lengths of 1900mm to 2900mm and has a capacity to inspect up to 400 products per minute

Output signals from the metal detector and checkweigher operate independent reject mechanisms. One rejects metal contaminated products, while the other rejects off weight products.

“This feature keeps metal contaminated products separate from potentially reusable off weight products. It comes with three reject options; an Air Blast, Pusher or a Diverter enabling compatibility with different types and sizes of products,” said the firm.

Increased production

The CW3’s user-friendly single touch screen – with dual controls for both machines – makes product changes quick and simple. Ease of data entry “reduces possible operator errors and increases productivity”, added the company. The software minimises give away, with the option of highlighting pound per kilo readings on screen to display food processor savings.

The machine includes a performance validation system (PVS) which automatically prompts the operator to test performance at pre-set intervals, conforming to HACCP standards and producing detailed records of any contaminants found. It is also simple to clean thanks to its compact design and quick release belts.
