Bulgarian meat processing company Boni Holding has been given a €6.5m loan from the EBRD to boost energy efficiency and bring it into line with European eco-standards.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) said the cash will be used by the company, Bulgaria’s leading meat processing outfit, to introduce energy efficiency measures at its plant and refurbish its pig farms.

“This project reinforces the EBRD’s commitment to support the development of private businesses with strong vision in the current challenging market conditions," said Gilles Mettetal, of the body's Agribusiness Team. “We are pleased to continue our successful relationship with Boni Holding and help the company raise further its production and environmental standards”.

In 2006, the EBRD provided the company with a €15m loan to invest in a cutting and deboning hall, as well as meat processing units.
