Huhtamaki Oyj has sold its South African subsidiary as its global strategy to off-load its rigid packing operations continues.

The Finnish company announced the sale of its plant in Roodekop to Polyoak Packaging Ltd. The unit employs 55 people and has an annual turnover of €5m. The facility serves the local edible fats and dairy markets and has dedicated injection molding assets, said a company statement.

“This transaction supports Huhtamaki’s strategic review of rigid plastic consumer goods operations”, says Huhtamaki Oyj’s CEO Jukka Moisio. “We will continue to supply the South African market in a number of segments including foodservice, molded fiber and flexible packaging. We also continue production at our three remaining units in South Africa.”

Last month, Huhtamaki divested its Australian polystyrene operation and in June sold its South American rigid packing outfit to Bemis.
