Danish ingredients giant Danisco has launched a new range of
flavourings designed for yoghurt candies - allowing confectioners
to give boiled sweets a healthier image.

The fruit tastes were specially developed for hard-boiled yoghurt candies and aim to give the product a lighter mouth feel.

After figures published last week by DEFRA showed expenditure on confectionery had dropped 6.1 per cent in the last year, it appears current innovation is needed in the sector to rejuvenate the unhealthy image of confectionery and entice consumers back to traditional indulgences.

According to the company, Danisco's new range uses fruit and yoghurt - food which is commonly associated with healthier lifestyles - to provide a natural taste to candies.

The flavourings manufacturer stated: "Fruit yoghurts are tipped to experience strong market growth in the years ahead. Danisco's Yogfruit and Yogberry concepts demonstrate some top opportunities for confectionery manufacturers to share the benefits of the growing yoghurt trend."

The range comes in the form of Yogfruit, in peach, cherry and banana and Yogberry, which consists of strawberry and raspberry.

Danisco claim the flavourings provide a very different alternative to standard boiled sweets by giving a fruity, mildy fermented yoghurt flavour as opposed to the creamy taste of most sweets already on the market.
