Snack maker United Biscuits has teamed up with packaging firm
Sonoco to give its core KP nuts brand a Christmas makeover.

The paperboard cans will carry festive designs, enhanced graphics and a silver cap to add to the nuts image as a luxury holiday indulgence.

Innovative packaging has become the latest battleground for snack makers jostling for a piece of the lucrative Christmas market with many companies introducing new designs and shapes to familiar well-established brands.

The 99 x 160mm cans are covered with brightly-coloured, varnished, litho-printed paper labels and will be rolled out in the UK for four varieties of the peanut product - dry roasted, original salted jumbo, honey roasted and sweet chilli.

United Biscuits' European buyer for tins, tubs and rigid plastics Dave Head said: "People tend to snack more during the holidays, and our new pack gives loyal customers, as well as impulse shoppers, a new reason to choose KP Nuts. Whether you are going to a party, need a last minute gift or simply want a special snack, KP Nuts in this unique can fill the bill."

To keep the product fresh, the hermetic can incorporates a foil membrane, an interior barrier lining and resealable opening.

Last week United Biscuits, who holds the number one spot in the UK biscuit market and produces the Jaffa Cakes and McVities brands, was bought by private equity group Blackstone in a deal worth £1.6bn (€2.3bn).

Sonoco, who recently acquired packaging firm Wycon Corporation, currently serves consumer product companies in the gum, confectionery, hard baked goods and snack foods markets.

The company, founded in 1899, has operations in 35 different countries and annual sales of $3.5bn (€2.7bn).
