A new pouch barrier paper provides food companies with an
aluminium-free packaging alternative to films and foil.

Stora Enso, the world's largest paper and board manufacturer, formulated the pouch paper to run on high-speed continuous motion machines manufactured by US-based Robert's Packaging.

The company says its new MultiFlex Pouch has been tested to run on Robert's Packaging's C-1500 series at full production speeds. Products can be packaged in a stand-up configuration that includes a fully integrated, resealable zipper attachment.

"With MultiFlex Pouch, brand owners and packagers now have the option to choose a more sustainable, aluminium-free barrier paper for stand-up pouch applications, without compromising performance on their existing high-production Robert's Packaging form, fill and seal equipment investment," Stora Enso stated.

The company designed MultiFlex with strong barrier to moisture and oxygen, while sealing in natural aromas and flavors.

As an aluminum-free packaging paper, MultiFlex Pouch can be inspected after filling. It can be used with radio frequency identification technology for tracking the products.

Robert's Packaging C-1500 machines can produce stand-up, gusseted, flat, and three- or four-sided seal pouches at a rate of up to 200 pouches per minute, the company claims.

"Based on the popularity of the stand-up pouch, we know that our customers are continuing to search for new and different packaging material options," stated Steve Koppe, general manager of Robert's Packaging. "This will continue to be the case as more and more companies and marketers explore the possibility of sustainable packaging solutions.
