Psion Teklogix has adapted its vehicle-mounted computer for the
transportation and food industries, allowing workers on the move to
link up to a plant's network and use radio frequency identification
(RFID) technology.

More and more computer technology is being used in food plants as companies try to reap the production boosting benefits of access to information. RFID te

RFID is a means of tracking products more efficiently in plants and through the supply chain. RFID is a method of identifying unique items using radio waves and a unique digital code for each item.

Psion Teklogix said its 8530 Vehicle-Mount Computer delivers all of the same connectivity and expansion capabilities as its current models, but with a display ideally suited to vertical industries such as transportation and food that demand applications with expanded graphical interface capabilities.

The computer is designed for warehouses, ports, manufacturing operations and yards. It is protected against dust and sprays of water at temperatures as low as -20°C. The 8530 can also withstand the substantial shock and vibration transferred from vehicles working in rugged indoor and outdoor applications, the company claimed.

The rugged computer includes a full-screen interface measuring about 10.4 inches (26.4cm). The large screen enables users to take advantage of the on-screen virtual keyboard giving enhanced functionality in certain applications.

The display can be read in sunlight and can be used with the company's peripherals and accessories. A separate full keyboard is also available as an option.

The 8530's standards-based platform also allows application developers to create customised applications to connect the computer to other mobile devices.

"The 8530 Vehicle-Mount Computer provides customers with a powerful, flexible vehicle-mount computer designed to provide the maximum performance in the most harsh industry environments," stated Ron Caines, Psion Teklogix's president of marketing.
