Axon has extended its tamper proof system to the fresh produce
market, saying its seal will help keep prying hands out of packaged
fruits and vegetables.

With fears of bioterrorism increasingly coming to the fore in the public's mind, Axon believes tamper proof sealing will be amarketing opportunity for producers who sell packaged fresh produce, especially in the pre-cut fruit and vegetables sector.

"The increase in demand for product safety for all markets led us to look at areas to expand into," Axon's director of sales, Ed Farley, stated in a press release.

Axon makes heat shrinkable band applicators that seal a product so if it is broken, the customer and store will know if someone has tampered the package. Axon makes heat shrinkable sleeve labelsand tamper-evident band and stretch sleeve machines.

The company's EZ-400 and EZ-650 machines can apply a tamper-evident seal around clamshell and large tray type packages, which are used by the produce industry.

Tamper evident banding assures packagers and processors that their product remains uncontaminated and undamaged. Applying a tamper evident seal to the lip of a clamshell or tray also eliminates thechance that a package will pop open during transportation, Axon stated.

Both machines can put a band around or partially sleeve either foil or plastic packages. The EZ-400 can handle a maximum sleeve width of 400mm. It is designed to accommodate product widths from3-11/16" to 9-7/8". The EZ-650 has a sleeve lay flat width range between 150mm to 650mm, and accommodates product widths from 3-1/16" to 16-3/16".

Both systems are fully automatic, continuous motion units. The machines can be integrated into existing lines. Axon can also provide a complete system including applicator, conveyor and heattunnel.

Axon makes packaging products for the food, dairy, beverage pharmaceutical, cosmetic and fragrances, personal care, nutritionals, chemical and industrial markets.

Sales of pre-cut fruit and vegetables have been growing over the past decade as consumers look for convenience and healthy eating. The pre-cut lettuce market is one example. The Produce MarketingAssociation reports that sales of pre-cut lettuce in the US will rise to $10.5bn (€8.8bn) in 2005 from $2.6bn (€2.2bn) in 1994.
