Danish ingredients company Danisco continues on the innovative trail with the launch this week of its latest pectin for yoghurt applications.

Grindsted Pectin SY 640 - developed 'to provide even more creaminess, add viscosity and reduce cost through formulation optimisation' - joins the existing Grinsted Pectin SY series already supplied by the company.

"Danisco is committed to bringing novel functionality, process improvements and cost reductions to our customers," said Ellen Trost, pectin product manager at Danisco. Adding that the new product 'is just one solution Danisco provides to the changing demands of the dairy industry'.

In January this year Danisco - the world's second largest pectin producer - announced that it would expand its Czech production capacity by 40 per cent to accommodate an expected growth rate of 5-6 per cent on the world market. The company clearly demonstrated its continued ambitions in the pectin market with Hans Henrik Hjorth, president of Danisco Textural Ingredients, commenting at the time: "The current 40 per cent expansion of the production capacity and the further development of our product types will accommodate part of the expected growth in the world consumption of pectin and reduce production costs."

According to the Danish company, in addition to lowering the cost of production, the new facilities at the Czech plant have enabled the firm to increase the production of speciality products for the dairy and confectionery industries - industries in which significant growth is expected.

Danisco claims in a statement this week that its Grinsted Pectin SY series increases the viscosity in yoghurt 'by approximately 20 to 30 per cent, and reduces the risk of syneresis, thus extending the shelf life of the product'.

In addition to pectin for yoghurt, Danisco manufactures pectin for a range of applications including their Pectin WAVE series for beverages, the AMD series for protein beverages, the YF series for yoghurt fruit preparations, the SF series for jams, jellies and fruit spreads and the CF series for confectionery fillings.

In 2000/01, Danisco reported net sales of €2.6 billion.
