The PPMA sponsored Starpack Award has gone to Field Packaging Systems, UK, for the process technology in its carton erecting system for After Eight mints.

This was the first time that a Starpack Award has been created to recognise the role that machinery innovation plays in the production of an entirely new packaging concept and, according to the judges, the entry was an excellent example which could have far-reaching consequences across a whole range of packaging. This potential was recognised by the judges' citation, which read, "We look forward to seeing this concept appear for other products such as sachets, where the convenience of accessibility by the consumer is a great advantage."

Collecting the award from PPMA general secretary Andrew Manly on behalf of Field Packaging Systems was project team manager, Jeff Jones.

Three other finalists for the award were commended. They were Ranpak, for its Fillpak void-fill converter; Smurfit UK for its carpet tile collation and wrap system; and TNA Europe for its VFFS machinery for the food industry.

Over 120 packaging designs received Starpack stars with 2003 proving to be a year marked by innovation and excellence as a record 13 Gold Stars were presented, the organisers said.
