Lock, the manufacturer of customised inspection systems, has announced at the Anuga FoodTec show in Germany this week that it has supplied a major Danish cheese producer with an improved metal detection system.

Lock Inspection Systems, currently exhibiting at hall 14.1, stand E20/F21, has worked with Schipper Kaas, a leading European distributor and producer of soft cheeses in "sausage form". The cheese producer has a customer base in Japan, the US and Australia - markets that demand an emphasis on high product standards for food safety and quality.

Occasional metal contamination is a concern throughout the cheese industry, whether metal swarf from machinery, fractions of broken cutters and blades or fragments of the clips used to seal packages. Schipper Kaas realised it could gain a competitive advantage by addressing the problem, as well as obtaining HACCP certification with its improved safety reach.

After what Lock says was careful analysis of the market and liaison with its engineers, Lock installed three MET 30+ Pipeline detectors at the plant. The ruggedly constructed equipment is designed to withstand the aggressive cleaning conditions at Schiper Kaas, where chemicals and high temperatures are common. The units are fully waterproof - sealed to IP6 - and modular construction aims at simplicity of servicing.

With lines operating at between 20 and 40 products per minute, Schipper Kaas was also keen to reduce downtime and product wastage. The detection units were therefore placed towards the end of each line, between the filling and sealing machines, to detect any metal contamination before the packaging was sealed.

T.M. Schipper, technical director at Schipper Kaas, commented: "Since the installation, we've been very pleased with the performance of the Lock system and contaminant detection efficiency has improved greatly. As well as being extremely sensitive, very reliable and very user friendly, the units have enabled us to obtain HACCP certification."

Lock Inspection Systems is established as the technical leader in supplying metal detection and conveyor systems to food industry sectors spanning confectionery, snack, bakery, ready meals and meat and poultry. Headquartered in the UK, with offices in France, the Netherlands and the USA, Lock has a global network of distributors and high calibre maintenance and research teams. In Germany, Lock is represented by its partner, Florin.
