The European Union has said that it will be maintaining its investigation into Brazilian exports of tin plate used in metallic food packaging, the business daily Gazeta Mercantil has reported.

The European trade bloc puts into effect this week safeguards on seven products. While included on a previous list of 15 items facing potential quotas and tariffs, tin plate and steel alloy bars remain free of the import restrictions for the time being.

EU officials will decide in February if the two products will remain exempt from safeguards, based on how the market evolves and the situation facing European steel makers.

Brazilian officials and industry representatives believe the threat to continue investigating the two products is a response to Brazil's accusation at the World Trade Organization that the EU subsidises its sugar producers.

Last year, Brazilian exports of tin plate and steel alloy bars reached US$65 million (€65.8m).
