Packaging Automation, the UK packaging equipment specialist, has successfully installed its latest machinery, the Vision 182 system, at Wrexam-based Delta Dailyfoods.

Packaging Automation claims that the machine, and the five sets of tools which were supplied with it, are operating so successfully that the company, which recently went independent after a management buy-out by its three directors, is considering ordering another.

Delta's factory manager Paul Wood has no doubts that the Vision 182 - a recent design from the manufacturer of heat sealing equipment - was the right choice for what is a somewhat complex operation, mounted by his company.

Wood said: "We have had no problems with it at all. It has streamlined our whole production unit in that we have been able to remove two existing machines and replace them with just one from PA."

Delta Dailyfoods turn out a large range of meals for the food service and retail sectors using the Vision 182 which is also there to support production of airline meals. The machine has been supplied complete with an in-feed conveyor and five sets of tools, including one for foil crimping. The latter was a necessary part of the deal because, although the company uses mainly CPET trays, they also pack in foil trays with a crimped foil lid.

"I have something like 150 different recipes running through the machine which allows us a great degree of flexibility within the unit. The tooling is also very flexible, reducing the amount of time it takes to change a production line, another big benefit," said Wood.

Although this was the first time Delta Dailyfoods had looked to Knutsford-based PA for its requirements, it will probably not be the last. "They are now our preferred supplier and we are already looking at having another Vision 182. They are reliable and reasonably local for us," said Wood. The Vision 182 is a compact in-line automatic heat-sealing system making it suitable for small- to medium-sized food and beverage manufacturers wanting to upgrade an existing semi-automatic production line. Capable of either atmospheric or modified atmosphere packing (MAP), the machine offers a number of features including rapid tool changing, self diagnostics and automatic container placement.

Packaging Automation was established in 1963 and is the UK's leading manufacturer of heat sealing machinery for the food industry.
