Crown Cork and Seal, the US-based international supplier of packaging products, has reported that construction of its new $40 million (€43 million) beverage can manufacturing plant in Seville, Spain is now on schedule for completion and will begin production this July, as planned.

Spain and Portugal represents the third largest European can market, and in 2000 demand there grew to 5.2 billion units. The company's new 36,000 square metre plant, will initially produce 750 million, 33cl two-piece beverage cans per year. The plant is intended to meet the needs of local area beer and soft drink producers, and has been designed to allow for further expansion, to meet future market needs.

"This investment demonstrates Crown's commitment to meet the needs of local, regional and global customers," says Juan Sanchez, plant manager of the new Seville operation. "We are currently importing beverage cans from our other European operations to support our customers' growing demand. This investment will enable us to satisfy demand on the Iberian Peninsula with high quality, locally produced cans."
