North Carolina-based Dewey’s unveiled a range of Southern cuisine-inspired cookies and crackers at the Summer Fancy Food Show held in New York City recently.

Opened in 1930 in Winston-Salem, Dewey’s specializes in handcrafted, small-batch baked goods. It also does private-label business with several US retailers.

CEO Scott Livengood said this is first time the baker has launched branded products into grocery stores.

The new cracker flavors include Carolina-style barbecue, chipotle cheddar cornbread and sharp aged cheddar; while the soft batch and crispy cookie line comes in banana pudding, pecan praline and birthday cake flavors.

All are made without artificial ingredients, preservatives or PHO, and are currently available at Central Market and The Fresh Market, prior to the national launch later this year, said Livengood.

Business expansion

In 1992, Dewey’s acquired Salem Baking Company, known for its branded Moravian cookies, crackers and cheese straws available at specialty food retailers. Since then, the company has extended its production capabilities to include cakes and other sweet baked goods.

Dewey's has experienced rapid growth since the acquisition entailing the opening of a second manufacturing facility in Winston-Salem three years ago, said Livengood.

“Now we have over 150,000 square feet of commercial baking space. Both plants are capable of making all our products,” he said.

“Salem Baking Company will continue to have a strong presence in the specialty food world,” Livengood said.
