Indulgent and natural snack producer Lotus Bakeries has voluntarily recalled products that contain a slightly higher than recommended level of Fipronil from Belgium supermarket shelves, but says UK market is unaffected.

The company has withdrawn a small number of batches of Amico, Madeleine, Zebra and Mini-Frangipane products from Belgium supermarket shelves as a precautionary measure, after it found traces of Fipronil in some products.

According to Frances Booth, UK category marketing manager, Lotus Bakeries, following the Fipronil scare, the company carried out tests on batches of cake specialities sold in the Belgium market, which were produced using contaminated eggs.

The tests revealed products did contain Fipronil slightly above the recommended EU level for finish products, although its very unlikely to threaten public health.

Responsible actions

Nonetheless, “Lotus Bakeries made the decision to remove the affected batches of the cake products from sale in Belgium,” Booth told BakeryandSnacks.

“Though the Fipronil contamination in these products is very low and represents no risk whatsoever to public health, Lotus Bakeries takes product safety extremely seriously, so we are withdrawing these affected batches of products where they are on sale,” she said.

UK unaffected

Frances confirmed that none of the affected products are sold in the UK

“This does not affect our UK customers in any way,” said Booth.

“Lotus Bakeries wishes to emphasize that only a few batches are affected. Therefore, all Lotus Bakeries products currently in store comply with the relevant legislation," said the €507m ($596m) company said in an earlier statement.
