UK supermarket Sainsbury’s said a move to sell basic tomatoes in cartons rather than cans will save half a million kilos of packaging a year and could pose a future threat to the supremacy of the metal container.
A development programme to enhance the appearance of steel for
packaging has been carried out by Arcelor Packaging International,
Corus Packaging Plus and Rasselstein.
CSN, the Brazil-based flat steelmaker, and Canadian aluminium
manufacturer Alcan are on a head-on collision course over which
will dominate the metal packaging market, reported Brazilian
business daily Gazeta Mercantil.
South African tin producer Phamine Mining, which is to open a new
smelter plant in Limpopo next month, has secured a tin supply
contract for steel manufacturer Iscor.
