Canadian food producer GoGo Quinoa has begun production of its organic and gluten-free cookies and snacks, following a $1.6m investment in state-of-the-art production lines.

The company manufactures and imports over 60 plant-based and allergen-free products made from super grains like amaranth, quinoa, buckwheat and chia, and legumes, including lentils and chickpeas, which it sells locally and abroad.

Its 45 000 square foot factory – located at its Laval, Quebec headquarters – is certified SQF, organic, gluten-free and Kosher.

“The local production of our cookies, crackers and puffed snacks is leveraging our ability to offer nutritional products and to choose local suppliers,” said Martin Bilodeau, founding president of GoGo Quinoa.

“We aim to offer high quality organic and gluten-free products with an increased content of plant-based proteins, fibers and with less sugar.”

He added new recipes and flavors using locally grown quinoa, hemp, berries, legumes, and maple syrup are in the works, which will offer innovative alternatives to the current product offering and address consumer demand for fresher products with a lighter carbon footprint.

Quinoa is a grain crop, also known as Chenopodium quinoa. It is a good source of minerals, including manganese, copper, phosphorus, magnesium, folate and zinc.

It is also rich in protein, vitamins and fiber, and naturally gluten-free, which makes it increasingly popular among today's consumer's looking for healthier alternatives to starch.

The United Nations declared 2013 as the International Year of Quinoa.

Canada is the fourth largest importer of quinoa, behind the US, Germany and UAE, with imports equating to around US$16m in 2017.
