The McVitie’s maker has high hopes for Flipz – the popular US chocolate-covered pretzel snack – which it rolled out across the UK this month.

Flipz has seen a huge surge in popularity in the States, answering to consumer demand for sweet and savory flavor combinations.

The brand is currently worth $61m RSV in the US, having seen double-digit growth in the past three years.

According to research, the Brits are quickly developing the same taste for the dichotomous combination.

Tapping into the trend

“Research [from Mintel’s 2018 Crisps, Savory Snacks and Nuts – UK report] suggests that almost one in six consumers would be interested in a savory snack with chocolate – a trend which Flipz should be well placed to tap into,” said Sarah Horowitz, director of the New Ventures Business Unit at pladis UK and Ireland.

“Chocolate-covered pretzels are a consumer favorite in the US and we are excited to bring the Flipz brand to UK consumers.

“We believe people will love the combination of a salty pretzel smothered in a smooth chocolate coating.”

Aimed at snack-loving young adults, Flipz are available in two variants – Milk Chocolate and Dark Chocolate – in 100g pouches at a RSP of £1.50 ($2.03).

The new products have been rolled out across grocery stores across the UK this month and are expected to achieve retail sales of £9m ($12.1m) in its first year.

Re-introduction into the UK

Posted by Stuart Fanning,

Nestle launched Flipz in the UK in 1998, and discontinued it in 2000 after it flopped. Maybe now the time will be right. We will see.
