The broad appeal of snack bars has more and more on-the-go Americans reaching for them as snacks and meal replacers, according to new data from research firm NPD Group.

Total dollar volume of snack bars shipped through broadline foodservice distributors to total foodservice outlets grew 15% and units shipped by 13% in the year ending November 2013 compared to same period a year ago, according to NPD’s SupplyTrack, which captures information on categories, brands, items, product attributes and operator segments.

Sales of snack bars increased 28% at hotels and motels, compared to the previous year, while sales to convenience stores, foodservice outlets and supermarkets also posted double-digit growth during the period. Cereal-type bars lead the snack bar category with the largest dollar volume share, followed by granola and diet/health snack bars.
