Amcor has set new environmental reduction targets that are to be rolled out across its worldwide operations, the company announced today.

Globally, the firm is aiming for a 10 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a 50 per cent reduction in waste to landfill by 2015/16.

At Amcor's Australian sites, the firm is aiming for a 25 per cent reduction in potable water use.

The company also plans to have active water management plans in place at all of its other sites by the end of this year.

A spokesperson from Amcor told FoodProductionDaily.com the sustainability leaders from each Amcor businesses began to develop the new targets in October 2010.

Using their knowledge of the operations and capabilities of their respective businesses, the sustainability leaders estimated the potential for performance improvements and the actions and resources required to achieve them, he explained.

He said this ‘bottom-up’ approach takes into consideration the different challenges, opportunities and business plans of each Amcor Business and their contribution to the overall Group performance.

"As the world's largest packaging company, we have the opportunity to take the lead on packaging sustainability," said Ken Mackenzie, Amcor's managing director and CEO.

“Our approach to sustainability continues to evolve and move beyond compliance and operational efficiencies to one that will drive sustainability across the supply chain of packaged goods.”

Long term

In addition to the new short term targets, Amcor said it will continue with the long term emissions reduction goal of 60 per cent by 2029/30.

Progress against targets is reported each year in Amcor's sustainability report, which is reviewed by an independent third party.

Environmental data is also supplied on an ongoing basis to third parties for indices such as the Carbon Disclosure Project and the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.

Amcor said it is the only packaging company in the Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index as well as being included in both the Carbon Disclosure Project Leadership Index (Aus &NZ) and the FTSE4Good index.
