Kellogg fails to name chemical responsible for packaging recall
Kellogg Company is remaining tight-lipped over the name of the packaging chemical that triggered its recall of 28 million packets of breakfast cereal last month.
The firm has failed to supply information on the precise identity of substance or the levels at which it was present in the packing lining of four different types of cereals despite several requests from FoodProductionDaily.com to do so.
The company issued a recall on 25 June after admitting “slightly elevated” levels of an FDA-approved chemical was responsible for off-flavours and smells in a range of cereal products that had caused vomiting and nausea in some consumers.
In previous statements it said analyses by its scientist had not revealed any substances that are not commonly used in packaging materials and the chemical is routinely used to coat foods such as cheese, raw fruit and vegetables such as cucumbers.
