A China-based manufacturer of weighing and packaging products is looking for greater collaboration with confectioners and other food manufacturers to establish itself on the European market.

A spokesperson for the company Saimo told ConfectioneryNews.com that while the group is well established in China, it is hoping to use its recently established European subsidiary to specifically target the needs of European processors.

The group, which manufactures various equipment like multihead combination weighers and formfill and seal baggers, claims that the European confectionery market is particularly susceptible for more innovative packaging solutions from smaller less established groups.

To this end, after having already worked with a UK sweet maker on developing a vertical form seal bagger for candy products, Saimo says it will display its latest products at next months Process and Packaging Machinery Association(PPMA) show in Birmingham, England.

Euro focus

With offices already set up in the Netherland’s and the UK, the company spokesperson said that they were looking at working with distribution agents and manufacturers in France, Germany and Italy. Saimo claims that it has already engaged in talks with a major continental European confectioner over a possible cooperation.

In order to specifically tailor it packers and weighers for European manufacturers, the Saimo spokesperson said the company was continuing to seek out confectioners and other groups requiring new process solutions.

“Instead of simply repackaging products developed from our Chinese operations, we are looking to provide specific solutions and after sales support to customers,” he stated. “We are looking to offer complete line solutions for food manufacturers, from check weighing and vertical pack sealing to end of line and case packers.”

Snack manufacture

The spokesperson said that major Asian rivals such as Ishida are firmly established in areas like snack packaging and processing, which made it more difficult to carve out a niche in the sector.

Confectionery, by contrast, was an area with much more potential for smaller pack groups, the spokesperson claimed.
