Launched last month as FreshPax S, the sorbent sachets inhibit oxidative and moisture-mediated degradation within refrigerated foods from days to weeks, and within shelf-stable products from months to years, according to the company. Products that were formerly distributed frozen to maintain product characteristics can now be distributed refrigerated with the same shelf life, it adds. Nutritive value FreshPax S also protects characteristics such as flavour, aroma, texture and mouth feel as well as nutritive value, according to the company. It is said to be particularly effective for prepared foods comprising dough or incorporating a filling where moisture levels must be regulated precisely. Its oxygen scavenging component cuts and maintains oxygen levels to less than one per cent at relative humidity levels of 40 to 50 per cent. This is said to prevent the onset of mold growth, aerobic degradation and other spoilage. In addition to inhibiting oxidative degradation, it can also be used to manage moisture levels. The sorbent can be loaded with moisture to maintain a relative humidity level inside a package within five per cent of a targeted equilibrium given known ingress and egress rates. Customised solution "FreshPax S sorbent is unique in that it has both oxygen and moisture regulating capabilities," claimed Multisorb's Robert Sabdo. "We are able to fashion a customized solution tailored to the individual needs of specific applications based on product and packaging requirements." The sorbent sachets are available in a wide range of sizes and can be inserted into most packages, he added. Comprising solely food grade ingredients, the sorbent minimizes the need for BHA, BHT, sulphur dioxide, sorbates, benzoates and other food preservatives, says the company.
