"The new RTR-61 hand held unit acts both as a thermometer and temperature recorder to measure and record the internal temperature of food items and liquids using a needle-type sensor,"​ said Steve Knuth, president of T and D US. Also recorded are the time and date of the test. The tester promises to be particularly useful for supervisors working in food production plants in allowing them to monitor, record and log the temperatures of food products at various stages of the production process, added Knuth. Short range wireless capacity ​ The unit's built in short range wireless capacity allows temperature recordings to be transmitted to a monitoring centre while managing multiple units simultaneously. "The big benefit of this system is that temperature recordings from an individual unit or a number of units can be down-loaded by wireless communication and sent to a supervisor,"​ said Knuth. "There are other hand-held thermometers but none with wireless data collection,"​ he claimed. Splash resistance ​ The RTR-61, which measures and records temperatures from minus 13° F to 455° F, has been designed to meet IP64 standards on cover splash resistance and it is rated for use in daily life rather than solely under laboratory conditions. The unit also incorporates a temperature stabilization function, said Knuth. "If a change in temperature occurs which is greater than that which was set as the allowable standard, a temperature recording will be made only after a gap of up to 15 seconds when stabilization has occurred." ​ The wireless hand-held data logger could also be used to support food safety management (in compliance with HACCP standards) by quality assurance managers of restaurant chains, according to the company. For wireless communication, each unit requires the use of T and D Corporation's RTR-61SK Push Wireless Communication Set. The RTR-61 costs $449 but discounts are available for bulk orders, said Knuth
