Nordson will work with US-based Sensory Analytics in a
collaboration it claims will allow it to improve quality and reduce
the costs of coating beverage cans and other metallic packaging.

As part of the new agreement between the companies, Nordson says it will be able to make use of its partner SpecMetrix Technology in its new Cscan+ coating measurement products. Company spokesperson Mark Novotny told BeverageDaily.com that by using Sensory Analytics' technology in its own technology it would be able to expand the services offered for metallic packaging. "We provide equipment and systems that apply and cure coatings; with the SpecMetrix technology customers can now measure the actual amount of coating applied to the substrate," he said. Novotny added that the coatings are vitally important for protecting beverage cans from breakage and therefore compromising the integrity of the packaging inside. To step up the protection within the can, he claimed the Specmetrix system was able to measure the amount of coating used both on the inside and outside of beverage cans, even over black inks. According to Nordson, the use of this technology within is own Cscan+ product will allow processors and packagers across the world to have a greater awareness in just how they are currently coating their metallic packaging. "Nordson appreciates the unique challenges being faced by global manufacturers of coated products," stated Doug Bloomfield, vice president of the company's coating division. "These new non-contact coating measurement systems help beverage and food container manufacturers optimise their coating quality, while reducing production costs." SpecMetrix technology The Specmetrix technology offers the industry a real-time system for measuring coating quality with both portable and automated designs depending on industry requirements, its manufacturer said.
