Crown Food Europe and Crown Closures Europe yesterday said that the price increase of an average of 5.5 per cent would take effect from 1 January across all markets and regions. Crown says the price increase was necessary after leading tinplate producers publicly announced their decision to significantly raise prices on their products in Europe. "Alongside this announced increase in its largest cost input, the constant pressure on oil prices and energy costs seen since 2005 continue to impact on both Crown's manufacturing processes and in the prices it has to pay for all its other incoming materials," the company stated. Crown said it continues to implement significant cost saving programmes, but these would not be sufficient to cover the continued rises in input costs. "Crown remains committed to implementing its cost reduction programmes and developing new containers and technologies to meet customers' market needs," the company stated.
