Wastewater recycler uses combined technologies

A new treatment system integrates two technologies to recycle
wastewater in plants, claims its manufacturer, helping food and
drink firms to meet their environmental commitments.

Water Maze said its EC1-300A combines electrocoagulation (EC) - an electrolytic process - with polymer injection to provide efficient treatment of wastewaters, including those containing suspended solids and emulsified oils. Food and beverage plants typically use a large volume of water to process products and to clean plant equipment. Environmental concerns mean companies are under increasing pressure to cut down on water usage, as well as make sure wastewater discharged has been cleaned properly. Finding the best method of doing this is therefore often a cost saver for plants in meeting food safety and environmental regulations. EC technology removes pollutants using metal hydrozide species, which coagulate matter, which can then be separated from the water. The benefits of the technology include the lack of chemicals required, its effectiveness at removing tiny particles, and lower operating costs due to lack of moving parts required for the process. The system injects the waste stream with ozone for bacteria and odor control eliminating the need for chlorine and other harmful sanitizers, the company claims. The EC1-300A is automated with no filters to change, which removes the requirement for operator training or constant maintenance, the company claims. Three stainless steel compartment tanks with sloped floors inside the system aid in the automatic purging process and sludge removal. The electrical controls are protected from pressure washer overspray by metal doors, which also ensure the system is secure. The system is enclosed in a metal cabinet, which protects against the elements and comes with an optional thermostat-controlled heater for reducing the risk of freezing. It is also ETL certified to the rigid UL-73 safety standards and is built in an ISO-9001-quality Water Maze factory. The footprint of the system measures 1m x 2.3m (40 by 91 inches), which also has no towers, tanks and exposed wiring associated with most water treatment systems, Water Maze claims. Water Maze said the EC1-300A can be used in conjunction with the Water Maze WP-914 wash pad to create a totally self-contained portable wash rack that captures and recycles all of the wash water. US-based Water Maze also manufactures water treatment systems with a variety of technologies, including bioremediation, filtration and evaporation.
