The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations has released estimates of global cereal production this year. Figures suggest that overall production will dip slightly across Europe.
According to the FAO, a reduction in wheat output is forecast in the European Union (EU) in 2003 but outputs of other grains will change little compared to last year.
However, reduced cereal outputs are expected in several European countries because of unseasonal weather. This is most likely to affect winter grains and spring planting in parts of the continent.
The FAO predicts that this could lead to significantly lower returns than in the past few years.
However, the FAO predicts a sharp recovery in the US grain market, something that could ultimately boost the global food industry as a whole.
According to latest forecasts, output could increase by almost 50 per cent in Canada and about 15 per cent in the United States.
