More than 1 450 companies with 117 000 employees operate in this area. Consequently France holds 4th place in the world behind the USA, Japan and Germany. 12 million tonnes of packaging are produced per year, about one third of this volume is accounted for by paper / board and 30 per cent by plastics. Glass, metal and - to a minor extent - wood share the remaining 35 per cent.

The French consume an average of 200 kg of packaging per capita and year, whereas the European average is 120 kg. There are about 1 450 production companies, 1 000 of which have more than 20 employees.
