A product recall is the food industry’s nightmare, but unfortunately, happens all too often.
The bakery and snack sector was particularly hard hit at the beginning of last year, when nuts and seeds were flagged as the ingredients that prompted the most product recalls in the EU.
This affected many companies around the world, particularly snack manufacturers in the US.
Drive by emotion
While usually undertaken voluntarily by a company to lessen the effects that a product recall may have on consumer safety and product reputation, a recall is a highly involved intricate process that’s usually surrounded by a lot of emotion.
Intricate, because it needs to be handled quickly yet professionally, and emotionally, because the consumer’s health has been put on the line and the repute of both product and company will be questioned.
